Background. As therapy of post-irradiation injuries with hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) is a new field in Slovenia, the following study was conducted to evaluate its usefulness and effectiveness in patients who had been previously irradiated for carcinomas of the oral cavity and pharynx. Patients and methods. Patients with post-irradiation injuries treated with HBOwere compared with those treated without HBO. In this way, two groups of patients with post-irradiation caries (PIC) who needed dental extractions werecompared, the test group (n=5) being treated with the aid of HBO, and the control group (n=5) without HBO. Similarly, two groups of patients with osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the mandible were compared, again the test group (n=5) treated with HBO, and the control group (n=7) without HBO. A comparison was conducted between matching groups regarding the final result and time of treatment, the number of hospitalisations, the total number of hospital days, and the total price of treatment. Results. The final result and time of treatment were statistically significantly (p<0.01) better in the HBO group, both in PIC and ORN patients, as compared to controls. The total price of treatment was significantly (p<0.05) greater in the HBO group of patients withPIC, and insignificantly smaller in the HBO group of patients with ORN. Conclusions. Based on the results, it is concluded that HBO therapy improves therapy of post-irradiation injuries.
