On Wednesday, August 5th 2026, prof. dr. Andrej Gams and Anže Balantič joined forces with the Trbovlje Fire Brigade and Katapult Robotika to test the use of a robotic dog in firefighting operations.

The advanced robotic system successfully completed a range of tasks, including inspecting buildings using a thermal imaging camera, and carrying heavy equipment to upper floors. With a payload capacity of up to 120 kilograms and the ability to carry a variety of sensors, thermal imaging equipment, or a robotic arm, the robot could provide support to firefighters in a number of ways. Potential applications include inspecting and mapping hazardous areas, locating fire hotspots, and transporting equipment, thereby reducing firefighters’ direct exposure to dangerous conditions.

The tests highlighted the potential of robotic dogs as valuable tools for firefighters, particularly at a time when fire risks are becoming an increasingly important concern both in Slovenia and around the world.
